The 4th Annual West Akron 5K is fast approaching. After the success of the Inaugural Run/Walk, we are looking forward to exceeding last year’s participation. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, August 5, 2017! Come help support our community!!!
We are extremely excited to present the 4th Annual West Akron 5K Run/Walk in collaboration with The Gus Johnson Community Foundation, on August 5, 2017. This collaboration aims to bring a community together while raising funds to create a spirit of health, wellness and philanthropy for the students and surrounding neighborhood at John R. Buchtel High School. Proceeds from race events are donated to the Buchtel High School’s stadium fund.
Buchtel High School opened in 1931 and is named after Akron industrialist and philanthropist John R. Buchtel. Mr. Buchtel helped to organize and finance a number of early Akron firms, including the Goodrich Corporation. Buchtel High School has been and continues to be a recognized leader in multiple sports categories. The Griffs over the years have achieved championship caliber success in football, cross country, swimming, and track. Buchtel High School has produced great athletes who have gone on to play at the highest level such as, Billy Baldwin (Baseball), Art Kusnyer (Baseball), Levert Carr (Football), and Ricky Powers (Football and current Head Coach).
Alumni Mary Anderson, class of 1994 and a two-time Iraq war veteran, wants to help give back to the school that nurtured her. With support and sponsorship from the City of Akron, The Gus Johnson Community Foundation and the United Women of Wholeness, we are looking forward to working diligently to raise funds for this important endeavor.
