We are excited to be present our 5th Annual West Akron 5K Run/Walk in collaboration with The Gus Johnson Community Foundation. We aim to bring a wellness initiative to the community while raising funds to create a spirit of philanthropy for the students at John R. Buchtel High School. To date, our collaboration has been able to donate $23,000 to the Buchtel Stadium fund. With support and sponsorship from our race committee, the City of Akron, The Gus Johnson Community Foundation and the United Women of Wholeness, we are looking forward to working diligently to continue to raise funds for the Buchtel Cluster of schools.
Buchtel High School opened in 1931 and is named after Akron industrialist and philanthropist John R. Buchtel. Mr. Buchtel helped to organize and finance a number of early Akron firms, including the Goodrich Corporation. Buchtel High School has been and continues to be a recognized leader in multiple sports categories. The Griffs over the years have achieved championship caliber success in football, cross country, swimming, and track. Buchtel High School has produced great athletes who have gone on to play at the highest level such as, Billy Baldwin (Baseball), Art Kusnyer (Baseball), Levert Carr (Football), and Ricky Powers (Football and current Head Coach).
Alumni Mary Anderson, class of 1994 and a two-time Iraq war veteran, wants to help give back to the school that nurtured her. With support and sponsorship from the City of Akron, The Gus Johnson Community Foundation and the United Women of Wholeness, we are looking forward to working diligently to raise funds for this important endeavor.
