SUMMARY:Linden Classic 5k Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Linden Classic 5k Run/Walk is an ode to one of Columbus’ oldest\, most well-established neighborhoods. The annual event is a unique celebration of faith\, fitness\, and fellowship. Starting at New Salem Baptist Church\, 2956 Cleveland Ave. at 8:30 am\, the 5k will wind through the neighborhood\, down Cleveland Ave\, and turn at 17th Ave to finish at St. Stephen’s Community House. \nRegistration and race day packet pick-up will begin at 7:00 am at New Salem Baptist Church\, 2956 Cleveland Ave. \nUpon the  finish at St. Stephen’s Community House\, shuttles will be available to transport runners/walkers back to their cars parked at New Salem Baptist Church. Shuttles will run while the race is in process and continue until 4:00 pm. \nRace participants can also choose to park at St. Stephen’s\, but must depart on the shuttles to New Salem Church at either 7:00 am or the final shuttle at 7:30 am to reach the starting line in time. \nCreating a connected community is our priority! Participants are encouraged to register in advance. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a family-run\, charitable 5k in support of the local ALS Association\, which provides much-needed services to local ALS patients and their families. The course is fast and fun\, and all proceeds go to charity. Organized by 13-year-old Zach Green in memory of his grandmother\, Marlin Marshall\, who died from complications of ALS in 2015. \n\nAn open letter from Zach Green:\n\nI am organizing this race (with the help of my parents) to raise money for the area’s local ALS Association\, which advocates for people with ALS and empowers them to live their lives to the fullest.\n\nSeveral years ago\, my grandmother Marlin Marshall died from the complications of ALS and this event is dedicated to her name and memory. Your race entry fees and your donations will help ALS-affected individuals and their families as they manage this awful\, degenerative disease. ALS gets worse over time\, and caring for ALS-affected loved ones is a physical and emotional challenge.\n\nIt’s actually the reason I wanted to host a 5k Run / Walk event.\n\nMy grandmother was active in her life and with me\, all the way up to the point where she could not be. She used to hike miles of mountains in a day\, but by the time the disease got a hold of her\, she had difficulty walking from her car to the house. She used to do spin classes\, and yoga\, and walk. But\, as ALS took hold\, she spent most of her day sitting down.\n\nMy mom always talks about watching ALS get worse\, and how her mom said that being able to move “is a gift”. Most of us take that movement for granted. So\, now\, I move for my grandmother because I can. And\, I want you to do the same.\n\nCome out and move your body with me\, my family\, our friends\, and the community. DESCRIPTION:Proceeds from the race will benefit USO CSO and #22Kill. These non-profit organizations dedicate their time and effort to active military\, their families\, and veterans through various programs and events. Parking will be located across the street at Chase. The race will start and finish at the Sledding Hill entrance. Children under 5 are free. Strollers are welcome. \nThe USO of Central and Southern Ohio (CSO) provide a home away from home to our local military and their families. USO-CSO is in 65 counties in Central and Southern Ohio\, West Virginia\, and Northern Kentucky. The mission is to keep America’s military service members connected to family\, home\, and country. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThe Hocking Hills Indian Run trail winds through vast wooded areas of the Hocking Hills State Park (HHSP) and the Hocking State Forest\, crossing small streams\, uphill and down. The route covers some dirt roadways and pavement. The deep gorges shimmering waterfalls and lush forests provide the ultimate challenge to your powers of concentration. Choose between 60K\, 40K\, 20K\, 10K\, and 5K runs. The 60k run (37.28 miles) steps off at 7 a.m. The 40k race (24.85 miles) will begin at 8 a.m. The other races (5k\, 10k and 20k) are individual starts between 9 and 11 a.m. Each runner has an individual start and finish time recorded for them. \nThe 20k\, 40k and 60k races start at the Naturalist Cabin. (The 60k trail follows the 20k trail three times; the 40k follows it twice.) The path runs through the Hocking Hills State Park Cottages\, onto Route 664\, up Steel Hill Road\, along Chapel Ridge Road\, then into the Hocking Hills State Forest on the Queer Ridge Trail. From here it passes through the Cedar Falls area in Hocking Hills State Park\, through the forest to Rose Lake\, through the Old Man’s Cave campground\, over the A-Frame Bridge at Old Man’s Cave\, past the Naturalist’s Cabin at the Old Man’s Cave Visitors Center\, then up the hill back toward the Dining Lodge. Water stops are located at Steel Hill/Chapel Ridge Road\, Cedar Falls parking lot\, at the beginning of the Campground and at the Naturalist’s Cabin. Water stops are manned beginning at 8 a.m. so 60k’ers are invited to “stash” their own water/snacks around the course if that would be helpful to them. Fruit and water are available to 60k’ers at the Naturalist Cabin as they pass by. \n10k runners meet at the Hocking Hills Naturalist Cabin to register for the race. They are transported by bus to the start location\, which is near Top O the Caves Campground on Chapel Ridge Road in Hocking County. Our team has raised more than $6\,000 for the families of injured and families of fallen officers. For Police week PWOO members provided over 5\,000 officers with goody bags\, food\, and more to show them that we care and are proud of the hard work they put in every day with little to no thanks. While our past work has consistently been raised through donations\, with the growing need for support\, our budget must now be supplemented with fundraising. DESCRIPTION:Abram “Abe” Weinrib said the secret to a long life is kindness. A Holocaust survivor\, he passed away on January 4\, 2015 at the age of 102. His gentle smile and positive outlook could often be found in the Diamond Family Fitness Center where he would work out and stay fit\, well into his 90s. He visited with friends at the JCC every day\, which kept him young and vibrant. His presence is still felt throughout the Center\, where his youthful spirit lives on. We honor his memory and love of physical fitness with The Abe Weinrib Memorial 5K and Kids Dash.  \nEvent will begin and end on the back grounds of the JCC and heads out to the beautifully-paved Alum Creek Bike Trail. Strollers and walkers are welcome! We aim to bring a wellness initiative to the community while raising funds to create a spirit of philanthropy for the students at John R. Buchtel High School. To date\, our collaboration has been able to donate $23\,000 to the Buchtel Stadium fund. With support and sponsorship from our race committee\, the City of Akron\, The Gus Johnson Community Foundation and the United Women of Wholeness\, we are looking forward to working diligently to continue to raise funds for the Buchtel Cluster of schools. \n \nBuchtel High School opened in 1931 and is named after Akron industrialist and philanthropist John R. Buchtel. Mr. Buchtel helped to organize and finance a number of early Akron firms\, including the Goodrich Corporation. Buchtel High School has been and continues to be a recognized leader in multiple sports categories.
