The Gary Smith Worthington Classic was formed by and for people that love, support, admire, and thank the late Gary Smith for his devoted and dedicated years as coach and teacher for the Worthington School District. It is a favorite community event that takes participants through Worthington neighborhoods and on the beautiful Olentangy bike path.
Runners, walkers, and kids are welcome! Whether you are a competitive runner, fun runner, leisurely walker, or a walker with attitude, this event is for you. Strollers and leashed dogs are permitted. After a few introductory words, the 5 Mile Run starts at 9:00, the 3 Mile Walk at 9:05, and the supervised 2 Mile Kids’ Race at 9:15. All participants finish on the Thomas Worthington High School Track. Everyone will receive Gary Smith t-shirts. 5 and 3 milers will be given colorful coffee mugs and all runners in the Kids Race will receive favors. Awards will be given out to the top three overall and age-group finishers in the 5 Mile Run.
“The Gary Smith” was established in memory of Gary Smith, teacher and Track and Cross Country coach who was respected for his integrity and compassionate commitment to young people. Smith believed in students’ possibilities, in giving them sound knowledge, supporting them during hard work, and letting each one know he or she had innate value. Though he coached several state champion teams and athletes, he was known as one who stood up for life’s “underdogs,” making sure they got a fair chance. At his death in 1998, students, athletes and parents began the Gary Smith Worthington Classic to honor his memory. Proceeds from the race provide scholarships for Worthington students and donations to organizations that support local children with medical or physical challenges.
