Since our inception eight years ago\, the Gem of the Highlands 5K has donated more than $90\,000 in race proceeds. The new basketball courts at Waterworks Park and the dog park at Upper Millcrest Park have received the majority of our funding\, but smaller donations have been made to cover mulch\, grass seed and other general needs at five Norwood parks in beautification efforts. As a completely volunteer-led organization\, we will continue to focus our proceeds and donations on improving Norwood parks again this year. There is a Kid’s run (Little Gobbler) for ages 8 and under. There is a 5K and a 1.5 mile option for the run/walk\, and virtual option. \n\n\n\nNew Course in 2025.  \n\n\n\nGet ready for a scenic and festive Thanksgiving run through the heart of downtown Delaware!Your race begins and ends on charming East Winter Street\, near the library\, passing by local favorites The Strand Theatre\, 1808 and Mi Cerrito on your way to dash up historic Sandusky Street. Then it’s a smooth cruise down Wilmer before hitting an out-and-back stretch on Henry Street — a perfect place to find your rhythm. Then a unique crossing over the pedestrian bridge above Route 23\, offering epic views and a fun change of pace. From there\, it’s a final push down East Winter to the finish line celebration where it all began. \n\n\n\nThis the Thanksgiving Day tradition your family will look forward to every year! \n\n\n\nPlease note: portions of this course are coned down the middle\, maintaining traffic patterns\, so please be aware and stay inside the designed course. Sandusky Street from William to Wilmer will have the parking lane and one lane to run in (running on the far left lane). One where kids could come and try out running events if they were new to it\, or challenge themselves to run further or faster than they had before. Maybe even get ready for their cross country season in the fall! \n\n\n\nSo what is this?\n\n\n\nA three event race series to take place in June\, July\, and August! \n\n\n\nRACE DATESJUNE 11th JULY 16thAUGUST 13thThe races will start promptly at 6:00pm in the evening\, so parents and kiddos can get to the races on time!  \n\n\n\nSounds great! Where are the races?\n\n\n\nWe have a loop course at Glacier Ridge Metro Park. The races will start at the Dog Park area of the park (Google Maps pin here)Course Map (1 and 2 mile options)available here Course Map (1/2 mile option) available here \n\n\n\nThat’s fun! Can they switch distances? \n\n\n\nSure thing! We understand that young athletes have their ups and downs just like adult athletes. It’s best to talk with your athlete multiple times before race day to see what distance they’d like to run. Try to ask them if they’d like to beat their previous best mile time\, or try a new distance. It’s always good to remind athletes that it’s ok to be nervous about a race\, but just remind them that they’ll learn something from each race experience no matter how it goes. \n\n\n\nAthletes should try to make their decision before the race if possible\, but if they need to switch after doing one loop they need to immediately tell the Race Penguin timing staff so we can ensure correct results.If they are switching from the 1/2-mile race to another distance\, DO NOT START WITH THE OTHER 1/2 MILE RACERS. Please see the Race Penguin staff before the start of the race you’re planning on racing so they can switch you. \n\n\n\nYou will select your distance FOR ALL THREE EVENTS during registration. Can they switch distances? \n\n\n\nSure thing! We understand that young athletes have their ups and downs just like adult athletes. It’s best to talk with your athlete multiple times before race day to see what distance they’d like to run. Try to ask them if they’d like to beat their previous best mile time\, or try a new distance. It’s always good to remind athletes that it’s ok to be nervous about a race\, but just remind them that they’ll learn something from each race experience no matter how it goes. \n\n\n\nAthletes should try to make their decision before the race if possible\, but if they need to switch after doing one loop they need to immediately tell the Race Penguin timing staff so we can ensure correct results.If they are switching from the 1/2-mile race to another distance\, DO NOT START WITH THE OTHER 1/2 MILE RACERS. Please see the Race Penguin staff before the start of the race you’re planning on racing so they can switch you. \n\n\n\nYou will select your distance FOR ALL THREE EVENTS during registration.
